That is completely correct. The object of this game is to destroy everything and everyone else. You are the blue ships and fighters, you must obliterate everything else that is red. Build up your fighter bays to send out a fleet of shooting space ships and defend your base with laser canons. You earn money just by playing as well as shooting down other spacecraft.
